Overview: This course introduces you to the complex interdisciplinary field that is gender studies today. Gender studies brings together women’s and feminist studies, men’s and masculinity studies, concepts of mana whanine and mana tane, studies of gender itself, and LGBTQI studies. These areas of study create different ways of seeing class and analysing the socio-cultural and political world around us. We will explore these different ways of seeing and how different aspects of the world us (and we ourselves) change when viewed through the lenses of gender studies. We will explore the foundational concepts in the study of gender and critically engage with questions of identity, sexuality, family, the body, cultural practices and gender norms in light of contemporary gender theories.

Questions that we will consider will include. What does gender mean to you? How is it shaped by your own cultural context(s). How does gender organise lives, bodies, sexualities and desires? How does gender relate to sex and sexuality?  How and why is gender such an integral part of how we identify ourselves and others?
