Overall feedback on the crits and tasks for this coming week

Kia ora students,

Thanks for the crit session on Tuesday which went well overall. Just a little reminder for you all that it is necessary that you upload your material before 10pm on Monday night so that the Tuesday morning (Arch Technology) is free of any last-minute work (and you are, too!).

Tomorrow, I will be able to send you individual feedback for each pair/group, together with the grades for this first crit.

Today, I make a start with a few general remarks regarding your work so far:

·       More drawing! Ensure you prepare your own drawings, of maps, of building analysis, of diagrams, etc.
·       Be clear how the precedents are useful for your own designs. Many of you have begun to do so.
·       If you found interesting design moves in your precedents, use them for your museum design.
·       Your aim and purpose of the museum were generally underdeveloped – throughout the class. Some good beginnings are visible.
·       Remember: ‘bicultural’ does not refer to just Māori and Pākehā (and therefore neglects all other cultures), it means Māori and ALL other cultures in Aotearoa/New Zealand.
·       And: a good site is usually an underdeveloped or neglected site, not an already wonderful site.

To prepare for next week, we ask you to:

1. narrow down site options to one (or max. 2) site options. Have discussion points and visual imagery ready for the studio session. You will be required to conduct a detailed site analysis for the week after.
2. develop and sort the aim and purpose of your museum building. Remember, this is called ‘Te Papa North’ and therefore you will need to respond both to the current presence of museums in Auckland AND to Te Papa, its purpose and its collections.
3. begin an exploration of precedents into built form. Start to form an abstract idea of your building, with help of your precedent analysis.

Any questions, let me know.
