Message to MIT and Unitec learners on today’s TEU industrial action

Wednesday 21 October 2026

Kia ora koutou | Greetings to all,

I hope you’re doing well today.

Some of our kaimahi ‘staff’ who are members of the Tertiary Education Union (TEU) are taking industrial action between 1.15pm and 5pm today.

We recognise union members have the right to do this legally and we are committed to maintaining a respectful and constructive environment for everyone during this time.

As an organisation, we want to reassure you that we have taken steps to minimise impacts to our core purpose of teaching and learner support that the action may cause.

Your school will have been in touch to let you know how we are managing your learning with us over this period.

We have communicated to TEU that strike action, including the forming of picket lines, should not take place on MIT and Unitec property. The union has indicated to us that kaimahi may gather on site before moving off campus.

We have also asked that those taking strike action do not communicate with our learners on the issues they are seeking to raise with us.

We appreciate - as learners - you engage with us for the clear purpose of pursuing qualifications through our provider.

If you have any questions or require assistance and study with us at Ōtara, Manukau, TechPark or CBD Campuses, please contact our Student Support Advisors on 0800 696 487 or by email on Wecare@manukau.ac.nz

If you study with us at Mt Albert or Waitākere Campuses and require assistance, please contact Student Support by calling 0800 10 95 10 or email studentsupport@unitec.ac.nz

We appreciate the commitment and choice you have made to pursue qualifications through MIT and Unitec.

Thank you for your patience and understanding.

Ngā mihi nui | Many thanks,

Professor Christina Hong

Chief Executive – MIT and Unitec
