Facilitation vs Teaching

PASS and teaching share some surface similarities — both involve supporting students to understand the subject better. But the two roles are fundamentally different, and understanding that difference is one of the most important skills for a PASS Leader.

Similarities between PASS and teaching:

  • Sessions have structure and are often built around assignments or course content

  • Both aim to assist learning and clarify concepts

  • Both involve planning, questions, and giving advice

Differences:

  • PASS does not introduce new material — it only revisits what's already been taught

  • The Leader and students are peers, with a more equal relationship than teacher–student

  • PASS is not formally assessed

  • PASS is more flexible and can address social as well as academic concerns

  • The Leader has less subject authority than a lecturer, and that's intentional — it keeps the group learning from and with each other, not just from the Leader

The core facilitation skills a Leader develops are collaboration (getting students working with each other) and learning skills coaching (helping students build note-taking, time-management, and study techniques they can use independently).
